University Of Ghana Stuns Africa With $23M Breakthrough Grant

University of Ghana secures $23 million to drive innovation and research
The University of Ghana (UG) has secured nearly $23 million in research grants through its Research and Innovation Directorate. These came from 24 different global partners, bringing not just funding, but a clear endorsement of UG’s academic leadership.
According to Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, this milestone reflects the trust international organizations place in UG’s academic excellence and research output.
Graduation celebrates success and resilience of students
During the 2025 graduation ceremony, UG honored 1,948 graduates. These included:
- 107 PhD holders
- 917 Master’s degree recipients
- 920 undergraduate students
Among the undergraduates were students in Law, Business, Arts, and Fine Arts. The ceremony spanned July 24–26, 2025, and took place in Accra.
The Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, described the moment as one of personal triumph and institutional pride. She praised the students for overcoming academic and personal challenges.
UG ranked second-best in West Africa by THE
In the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025, UG was:
- Ranked #1 in Ghana
- Placed 2nd in West Africa
- Positioned 187th globally
This ranking highlights UG’s continued investment in infrastructure, research collaboration, and global visibility.
“This proves what is possible when vision aligns with purpose,” said Mrs. Chinery-Hesse.
Call for alumni to support future generations
The Chancellor urged graduates to stay connected through the UG Alumni Association. Giving back, she noted, would help future students thrive even more.
“You are more than degree holders. You are guardians of knowledge and pioneers of change,” she emphasized.
Ethical leadership takes center stage at UG
Dr. Sangu Delle, CEO of CarePoint and the event’s guest speaker, urged graduates to serve with purpose.
“Africa doesn’t just need degrees. It needs leaders with courage, ethics, and service at heart,” he declared.
He warned against normalizing corruption and encouraged accountability, even beyond politics.
Valedictorian reflects on the power of persistence
Alhassan Aboagye, this year’s valedictorian, reflected on a journey that tested and transformed every student.
He credited family support, faculty guidance, and sponsor generosity for helping many students complete their education.
“We’ve learned to adapt and grow. Let’s use our lessons to help others,” he encouraged his peers.
