Agona Swedru SHS Suspends 25 Students Over Fight Linked to Same-Sex Proposal
A clash between students of Agona Swedru Senior High School has led to the indefinite suspension of 25 final-year students. The fight reportedly began after one male student allegedly proposed a same-sex relationship to another male student, who turned him down.
The student who received the proposal confided in peers, who allegedly encouraged him to accept the offer with the intent to set up the other student. On the day of their meeting, a group of students believed to be connected to the one who was approached allegedly ambushed and assaulted the student who made the proposal.
This initial assault was met with retaliation, as the attacked student reportedly informed his dormitory mates, resulting in a second wave of violence. The incident quickly escalated, drawing in multiple students and forcing the school to intervene.
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, confirmed to Onua News that all 25 students involved in the melee were given a fair hearing before disciplinary action was taken.
Though suspended, the students will still sit for their final exams under strict supervision from their parents.
“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents,” Mrs. Andam said. “They now understand the seriousness of the GES code of conduct.”
This situation has reignited public conversations around school discipline, same-sex issues in conservative educational settings, and the role of peer pressure in escalating conflicts among students. The Ghana Education Service’s position remains clear: misconduct, regardless of context, will be dealt with firmly.
