Bawumia: Focus Guns on NDC, Not Me
A Bawumia unity call now comes from the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer hopeful and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He asks fellow aspirants to focus on the real political opponent, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). They should stop attacking one another. He spoke after filing his nomination in Accra on Thursday, August 28. His appeal for unity shows his commitment to a cohesive primary. He believes the party should unite its efforts.
The former Vice President questioned the strategic value of internal rivalry. He suggested that Ghana and the NPP would benefit more if party aspirants concentrated on constructive criticism. They should, for instance, hold the current government to account. They should also articulate a clear vision for the country. “For the various candidates contesting the flagbearership, I ask, won’t Ghana and the NPP be better off if, instead of focusing your guns on Bawumia, you focused on holding the government accountable to show that you can lead the NPP in holding the NDC accountable?” he asked.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that the party should not waste energy fighting itself. “Our true opponent is not within. Our true opponent is out there. We need unity to win,” he stated. His comments come as the party prepares for its highly anticipated primary election. Rivalry has, in fact, been a major theme in the contest so far. A former MP, for instance, has openly criticized Bawumia. Therefore, Bawumia’s plea for peace is very timely.
The former Vice President also reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful campaigning and party cohesion. He promised not to do anything to bring division. “If there were anyone to create problems within the NPP, it would not be Bawumia,” he said. This Bawumia unity call seeks to manage these tensions. It is an important message for all contenders.
The former Vice President further outlined his vision. He emphasized a focus on economic transformation. “My vision is to expand the Ghanaian economy through rich ideas that provide incentives and practical measures,” he said. His vision offers a clear alternative. It focuses on the national economy. Consequently, this message distinguishes him from his rivals. His call for unity and a focus on issues may bring the party together.
