Ghana is responding swiftly to a national tragedy that has shaken the country’s political landscape. The sudden death of two cabinet ministers in a helicopter crash on Wednesday has prompted immediate action from President John Dramani Mahama.
In a public announcement issued Thursday morning, the Communications Directorate of the Presidency confirmed the appointment of acting ministers to fill the sudden vacancies.
According to the statement, which was shared online, Finance Minister Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has been appointed as acting Minister for Defence.
In addition, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, will now also serve as acting Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology. These appointments take effect immediately.

This decision comes in the wake of the deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The two were among eight people aboard a helicopter that crashed in a forested area in Ghana’s Ashanti Region during an anti-illegal mining operation near Obuasi. The tragedy has sparked widespread mourning and calls for an official investigation into the cause of the crash.
The government’s swift action is seen as a measure to ensure continuity in leadership and national security during a time of sorrow and uncertainty. Minister of Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized in the release that governance will not falter.
As the nation awaits further updates, the public has been urged to remain calm. The tragic loss has united the country in grief, and all eyes are now on the investigation that will shed light on what went wrong.
