In a case that shocked Tarkwa, the court delivered Five Years Hard Labour for Tarkwa Woman Who Stole Pension. Comfort Asante, 34, stole GH¢96,490 from pension scheme clients and faced five years of hard labour in the Tarkwa Circuit Court.
Asante, a former field officer at the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC) Trustee, told the court she took the funds to pay her mother’s debts. The courtroom reacted with a mix of anger and sympathy as the details unfolded.
Chief Superintendent Alex Odonkor explained that Asante registered clients, collected contributions, and updated the Tier Three Pension Scheme records, also called the SSNIT Informal Scheme Product (SISP). She recorded payments on a company-issued phone and updated clients’ passbooks, which automatically generated receipts and alerts.
Between May 2 and May 5, 2023, clients reported missing alerts. The company discovered discrepancies between passbook entries and the official system. Some receipts Asante recorded did not exist electronically.
The police arrested Asante on May 17, 2023. During questioning, she admitted her actions. An internal audit confirmed the misappropriation of GH¢96,490 from 32 clients.
