GBC Workers Declare Amin Alhassan “Persona Non Grata”

Unionized staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have declared their Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, persona non grata. This Latin phrase, in fact, means “an unwelcome person.” At a durbar in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025, the Divisional Union Chairman, Sam Nat Kevor, accused Professor Alhassan of grave offenses. His accusations included mismanagement and financial impropriety. He also spoke about a neglect of staff welfare. He believes the Director-General has abandoned the corporation’s core mission. This GBC staff protest follows months of rising tensions.

The workers further questioned the Director-General’s legitimacy. They pointed out that his contract expired in 2023. In addition, they disclosed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has suspended his salary since March 2025. This, in fact, is due to the absence of financial clearance. The union has, therefore, sent multiple petitions to the National Media Commission (NMC). Consequently, they believe Professor Alhassan’s continued presence raises serious legal and financial questions. The NMC has, however, previously stated that it renewed his contract in February 2024. The workers say they did not receive formal communication.

The GBC staff protest has become more urgent. The union calls for the immediate removal of Professor Alhassan. This is an urgent intervention. Continued inaction, they warn, could cripple the operations of the state broadcaster. They believe the corporation is near collapse.

Union chairman Sam Nat Kevor stressed the point. The workers have lost confidence in their leader. “Now, GBC is a crime scene,” he said. He added that an individual with an expired contract should not be signing cheques. These remarks show the deep-seated anger among the workers.

Professor Alhassan has, however, denied all allegations. He stated that the NMC renewed his contract, insists he has increased the corporation’s revenue. He has also accused the union leader of not understanding media management. Despite these claims, the workers continue their action. They demand accountability.
