GRA Rejects NIA GH¢376m Debt Over Missing Approvals

GRA rejects NIA’s GH¢376 million debt demand, citing missing regulatory approvals.

GRA rejects NIA’s GH¢376 million debt demand due to lack of regulatory and governance approvals for the transaction.

This follows NIA’s decision to disconnect GRA from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform over unpaid fees.

In a statement released today, GRA explained that it cannot honour transactions without proper approval. The agency says this aligns with its governance principles and the president’s reset vision.

GRA claims the transaction that created the debt lacked legal clearance. It emphasized that enforcement without approval violates its internal protocols.

NIA had earlier disconnected GRA from the IVS, citing the massive debt. Officials said GRA failed to pay after repeated demands.

The fallout has already disrupted import and export activities. Traders now face delays clearing goods due to identity verification issues.

GRA also revealed that NIA has operated freely in GRA offices nationwide for years. The NIA allegedly pays no rent or utility bills despite running card registration desks from GRA premises.

According to GRA, the alleged debt appears to be a legacy issue from before 2025. The agency said its review showed no formal agreement with NIA.

Ongoing talks aim to resolve the dispute. GRA says it identified procedural breaches and cannot confirm any service agreement with NIA.

Despite the conflict, GRA says it remains committed to collaboration. It wants to preserve a strong inter-agency relationship and restore normal operations soon.

Meanwhile, NIA is reportedly exploring ways to erase its data from GRA systems. It has approached the Data Protection Commission for guidance.

GRA has urged calm and reassured the public of its commitment to fairness, integrity, and service. It remains open to dialogue with NIA to resolve the standoff.
