Helicopter crash Ghana kills Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed. Four others burnt beyond recognition.

A military helicopter carrying eight people crashed near Obuasi this morning. Flames engulfed the wreckage shortly after takeoff from Accra.

Four people burned beyond recognition.

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died on impact.

They were on their way to a program in Obuasi. Ministers Kofi Armah Buah and Frank Amoakohene arrived earlier and were not on board.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the crash. The Z9 helicopter lost radar contact at 09:12.

The flight also claimed Ag. Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Niru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, and Peter Anala.

Flying Officer Twum Ampadu piloted the aircraft.

Emergency teams reached the crash site. They found the wreckage in flames and several bodies unidentifiable.

The Z9 is often used for medical evacuations and military transport.

Officials suspect technical failure or bad weather. Investigators are still gathering evidence.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah announced the tragedy. He confirmed the names of those killed in the crash.

President Mahama was scheduled to attend the Obuasi event but canceled earlier.

The Jubilee House will hold a briefing today.

Ghanaians across the country are mourning. The government has ordered all flags to fly at half-mast.
