I didn’t know it was wrong: NDC Chair abandons Professor title after GTEC call

The NDC Chair has resigned as Professor after receiving a warning from GTEC.

I didn’t know it was wrong. That was the explanation from Richard Kofi Asiedu, Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, after dropping the “Professor” title. He made the announcement on August 1, 2025, following a formal caution from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

According to him, he had used the title for three years. Yet, after receiving a regulatory reminder, he immediately complied with the directive.

“As a law-abiding citizen, I have duly obliged the notice by GTEC,” Mr. Asiedu stated. “I’ve accordingly stopped using the title of professor.”

GTEC issued its warning in a letter dated July 28, 2024. The letter reminded him of a previous instruction from June 2, 2025. It cited the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), which forbids anyone from using academic titles without earning them through accredited academic procedures.

Despite this, Mr. Asiedu believed he was in the clear. He explained that Alfred Nobel University in Ukraine had awarded him the title. They did so to honor his contributions to human development.

“I didn’t know that honorary titles couldn’t be used until this prompting by GTEC,” he admitted. “I want to be clear—I didn’t chase this title. Alfred Nobel University followed my work and voluntarily honored me.”

He had used the honorary designation publicly since 2022. But now, he has removed it from all platforms.

Finally, Mr. Asiedu urged the public to take note of the change. He assured everyone that the matter had been addressed in full and without resistance.
