Mahama Urges Unity Amid National Mourning

Mahama urges unity after a deadly helicopter crash, calling on Ghanaians to turn grief into collective strength. The former president addressed the nation during an Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the State House in Accra.
He expressed deep sorrow for the eight victims killed on August 6 at Adansi Akrofuom. He described them as dedicated public servants whose shared goal was Ghana’s progress. He stressed the need for collective healing and a renewed national mission.
Mahama urged citizens to mourn as one family and avoid division. He reminded the nation that life is fragile, making unity essential in times of loss.
He honoured victims including Flight Officer Chumam Pedu, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, and Dr Ibrahim Murtala, MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. He praised their commitment to justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all Ghanaians.
He called for a focus on prevention over blame, citing another recent tragedy that claimed 15 young church members. He stressed Ghana’s resilience and the courage needed to rebuild.
Mahama announced that burial arrangements for the victims would begin soon, with state support for affected families. He closed by quoting Professor Kofi Awoonor, urging Ghanaians to honour the fallen through courage, innovation, and unity.
He concluded with a pledge that sorrow would not weaken the nation but strengthen its resolve to build a stronger Ghana.
