Ghana Confirms 20 New Mpox Cases, Bringing Total to 302

Mpox Cases in Ghana Hit 302 Amid Rising Weekly Infections

Mpox cases in Ghana have climbed to 302 after the Ghana Health Service (GHS) confirmed 20 new infections as of July 30, 2025. This new tally reflects a growing public health concern, particularly in the wake of Ghana’s first reported death from the disease just last week.

Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, spreads mainly through close contact with infected individuals. GHS officials are urging the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing early symptom reporting as a key to containment.

Notably, the previous update on July 22 had already raised concerns with 23 new infections, bringing the total at that point to 257. The recent surge has marked the steepest weekly rise since Mpox was first identified in Ghana, now shifting the tone of health warnings from caution to urgent action.

The viral infection presents with fever, body aches, and a characteristic skin rash. Transmission occurs via direct contact with infected rashes, body fluids, or contaminated surfaces. Children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals remain the most vulnerable.

To prevent further spread, the Ghana Health Service advises the public to avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, maintain good hand hygiene, and report suspected signs to the nearest health facility.

In a public notice, GHS reiterated, “Protect yourself and others by avoiding close contact with those showing symptoms, and ensure you report any suspected signs to the nearest health facility.”

As cases continue to rise, authorities are doubling down on community education and monitoring to stop the virus from gaining further ground in the country.
