NPP bows out of Tamale Central by-election in honour of Murtala Muhammed
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided not to contest the Tamale Central by-election following the tragic helicopter crash that killed the constituency’s Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and seven others.
The decision, made public on August 11, 2025, comes just days after a devastating helicopter crash on August 6 claimed eight lives — including Dr Muhammed’s.
The crash, which occurred in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region, has plunged the nation into mourning. Dr Muhammed who was buried in Accra on Sunday August 10 has been celebrated for his environmental advocacy and deep connection to grassroots communities.
“It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP,”
— NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.
