Ghana Faces Accountability Surge with OSP Corruption Cases

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has opened investigations into 67 major cases of suspected corruption cutting across government agencies, SOEs, and private companies.

High on the list is the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF). Investigators are reviewing payments linked to Agyapa Royalties, lithium and gold projects, land deals, and contracts from 2020 to 2024. Additionally, other institutions face scrutiny: Ghana Airports Company (contracts 2020–2024), Ghana Education Service (sale of appointment letters), National Commission on Culture (salary arrears extortion), Ghana Revenue Authority (ITAS contract with TATA), Ministry of Health (307 ambulance contract), National Cathedral Project (procurement and financing), ECG (termination of Beijing Xiao Cheng contract), and Tema Oil Refinery (management contracts).

The OSP conducted a joint payroll audit with the Controller, blocking GHS 2.85 million in ghost salaries every month. This measure saved Ghana an estimated GHS 34 million in 2024. Six convictions have already followed these actions.

Other areas under investigation include land allocations since 1993, illegal mining (galamsey), financial sector cleanup, GRA customs auctions, and contracts at Ghana Water, National Service, and the National Sports Authority. Meanwhile, 152 more cases remain at the preliminary stage.

The OSP emphasizes that corruption must become a high-risk and costly enterprise in Ghana. Its investigations aim to strengthen accountability, protect public resources, and restore confidence in government operations.
