Savannah Region Land Dispute: 5 Dead, 6 Injured
A land dispute in Ghana’s Savannah Region has turned deadly. A tragic gun battle has claimed five lives. In addition, six people are now seriously injured. The Savannah Region land dispute happened at Gbenyiri. It is a suburb of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba. The gun battle resulted from a conflict. Two parties, in fact, resorted to gunfire over a parcel of land.
The incident ignited on Sunday night. A report from the Katalba and Gbenyiri communities confirmed the incident. The chief of Gbenyiri fled his palace. He sought shelter at the Kalba chief’s palace. According to a police source, the Gbenyiri chief returned home the next day. His compatriot Kalba chief asked his son to escort him back. However, one of the factions ambushed them. They were attacked and killed.
The situation remains volatile. Savannah REGSEC has deployed a combined team of security personnel. This includes the Savannah Regional Police Commander, DCOP Awowolo. They will protect lives and properties in both Kalba and Gbenyiri. This action, furthermore, shows authorities’ concern. They want to restore order. Police have not yet made any arrests. This Savannah Region land dispute has, therefore, become a major security concern. The fight over land has cost too many lives. The regional police command is now urging calm. They are also asking for public support. They want to find the perpetrators.
