Double Track System Ends as SHS Single Track System Returns

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially ended the double-track system. This decision, for instance, marks a major milestone. From October 2025, all Senior High Schools will operate under the SHS single track system. This move will bring consistency and smooth operation across all schools. Students, teachers, and parents will all benefit from the change. The new calendar confirms clear reopening dates for all students.

According to a new circular from the GES, the new calendar will begin soon. The circular, moreover, was signed by the Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah. In addition, third-year students will return on October 11. Subsequently, first- and second-years will follow on October 18. In transitional schools, however, third-years will reopen on October 27. Second-years in those schools will start online classes on January 5, 2026, before returning in May.

This major shift comes after years of the double-track system. That system was introduced to handle a large influx of students. The government’s Free SHS policy, in fact, led to a significant increase in enrollment. Consequently, the double-track system was implemented to manage the high numbers. This change, therefore, is a sign of progress. It means the GES has now expanded school infrastructure. This allows for a return to a regular schedule.

Furthermore, the circular confirmed dates for the upcoming academic year. The 2026 WASSCE will run from April 20 to June 20. The next academic year, in fact, will start on September 11, 2026. This comprehensive schedule gives students and staff a clear plan. The GES expects the new SHS single track system to improve academic results. They believe it will create a more stable learning environment.
