State Funeral Helicopter Crash: Police Announce Traffic Diversions

The Ghana Police Service has rolled out traffic diversions ahead of the state funeral for helicopter crash victims on August 15. If you plan to be in Accra, you’ll want to know the new traffic routes.

At a press briefing on Thursday, August 14, the Police explained that officers would be deployed from midday Thursday through Friday. Their goal? Keep order and make sure traffic flows smoothly during the solemn occasion.

Starting 5 a.m. Friday, several diversions will take effect. Drivers coming from La Road might be rerouted to Oxford Street. Those travelling from Lokko Street to Castle Road could be redirected via Independence Avenue through the National Theatre.

Even drivers on Professor John Evans Atta Mills High Street may face rerouting to Liberia Road if traffic builds up. Police urge everyone to stay alert and follow instructions to avoid delays.

Parking arrangements have been set up for VIPs and VVIPs near the Independence Arch. Additional parking is available at Accra Sports Stadium, Osu Castle Car Park, the State House frontage, and Efua Sutherland Park. Recovery trucks will also stand by to clear broken-down or abandoned vehicles.

At the Military Cemetery, the Police will collaborate with the Ghana Armed Forces to manage both traffic and parking. Buses will transport the six bereaved families and a select number of mourners to the cemetery. This effort aims to reduce congestion along Burma Road and ensure the funeral proceeds smoothly.

If you’re heading near the funeral route, plan ahead, expect delays, and allow extra time. Police have set clear routes, parking, and transport plans to help mourners attend the August 15 state funeral safely. Follow all instructions and allow extra travel time.
