Wontumi TV Apologises to President Mahama Over Allegations
Wontumi TV has issued a public apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC, and the Ghanaian public.
The apology follows remarks by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare during an August 9 broadcast. He suggested, without evidence, that President Mahama was linked to a fatal military helicopter crash.
The crash claimed eight lives, including the Defence and Environment Ministers. The comments sparked outrage for lacking proof and damaging reputations.
In an August 12 statement, management called the remarks inappropriate and unfounded. They said such claims go against the station’s values of professionalism and fairness.
Wontumi TV, owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, stressed the comments were the presenter’s personal views. They did not reflect the station’s editorial position.
The station expressed regret for distress caused to the President, the NDC, and bereaved families. Disciplinary action will be taken against the presenter.
Management also announced stricter editorial controls. All future broadcasts must rely on verified facts and credible sources.
The apology comes during wider troubles for Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited.
Recently, the NCA suspended three of its radio stations over regulatory breaches. These included unauthorised STL frequency use and unapproved transmitter locations.
The suspensions followed a 30-day grace period, granted by President Mahama, for stations to address violations.
