President John Dramani Mahama has promised to achieve 100% local chicken production within three years. He made the ambitious declaration during a Friday, September 12, 2025 visit to the National Service Authority (NSA) Poultry Farm in Accra. The President praised the facility’s scale and efficiency. He then pledged to transform it into a center of excellence. Furthermore, this center will serve as a training and research farm. The President also disclosed a new national program. This initiative, named Nkoko Nkitikiti, will launch next month. Its purpose is to boost poultry production nationwide.

Moreover, the government’s renewed focus on the poultry sector forms a major part of its agricultural transformation agenda. This strategy aims to reduce Ghana’s poultry import bill. It also seeks to create jobs and improve food security. For example, the new program will support farmers at every level. The plan includes providing day-old chicks to large-scale farmers. It also provides targeted assistance to smaller producers. The ultimate goal is to halt massive importation of poultry products. It will also retain millions of dollars within the local economy. “We want to eat home-grown Ghanaian chickens,” the President declared to a loud applause.

In addition, the Finance Minister will personally visit the farm. This visit will assess the operations. It will also identify areas needing government support. This measure will ensure the sector gets necessary financial and policy backing. Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Service Secretariat (NSS), Ms. Ruth Dela Seddoh, provided background. She explained the facility began in the 1990s as a small farm with 2,500 birds. Since January 2025, it has expanded dramatically. The farm now houses over 100,000 birds. Of these, 70,000 are active.

A key part of the new strategy is a vertically integrated model. This model will cover feed production, in-house egg production, and broiler processing. This approach will create cost efficiency. It will also generate new income streams. Ms. Seddoh also appealed for government backing. She requested support for a state-of-the-art processing facility. The government’s plan is not just about producing food. It is also about empowering young graduates with practical skills. The NSA’s involvement in agriculture aligns with its ‘Feed Ghana Agenda’. Ms. Seddoh emphasized the mission of the NSA. She said they “harness the energy, intellect, and passion of our nation’s youth.” She also stressed that achieving the goal to revolutionize the industry is “non-negotiable.”

The government believes this 100% local chicken production by 2028 initiative will create tens of thousands of jobs. It will also strengthen local food supply chains. The move represents a serious effort to transform the industry.
