NPP Dismisses Poll Predicting NDC Win in Akwatia

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has dismissed an opinion poll. The poll predicted a victory for the NDC in the upcoming Akwatia by-election. A survey by Global Info Analytics, released on August 28, forecasted a win for the NDC’s Bernard Bediako. Bediako was leading with 53% support against 47% for the NPP’s Solomon K. Asumadu. The poll sampled 2,050 voters across the constituency. It positioned the NDC candidate ahead of the September 2 polls. This is a very important Akwatia by-election poll.

However, speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, August 31, Mustapha rejected the findings. He insisted the NPP is making significant inroads on the ground. He stated, “Not at all [there is no panic among our ranks because of the poll putting NDC ahead]. Mussa Dankwah can do his polls for all we care. We didn’t come here to do a picnic. We are working.”

He also questioned the popularity of the NDC candidate within his own community. He claimed his party’s candidate is “more light up.” Furthermore, he said that while he was speaking, he was in the NDC candidate’s hometown. He reported on the positive response the NPP was receiving there. He stated that the NDC candidate “doesn’t even talk to his own father.” Additionally, he claimed the candidate’s community people say he is “snubbish” and “disrespectful.” Therefore, he said they are ready to vote for the NPP. The Akwatia by-election poll does not reflect the mood on the ground.

The Akwatia by-election has become a closely watched contest. Both major parties are investing heavily in their campaigns. This underscores the importance of this political race. The final vote will determine the constituency’s representation.
