Legendary Fashion Designer Giorgio Armani Dies at 91
The world mourns as legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani dies at 91. He completely redefined menswear and womenswear. He also pioneered a new type of modern suit. His company began as a fashion brand. It then grew into an expansive empire. This empire now includes beauty, fragrance, music, and even luxury hotels. As a businessman, his company brought in over £2bn a year. The news of his passing prompted tributes from across the globe.
Many have poured in for the late designer. For instance, Donatella Versace paid tribute on her Instagram page. She posted a picture of him, calling him a “giant.” Versace also affirmed he “made history” and “will be remembered forever.” A statement on the Armani brand’s Instagram page said he worked until his final days. It described him as “indefatigable to the end,” driven by “relentless curiosity.” The statement also noted his “deep attention to the present and to people.”
Armani was a true pioneer. Consequently, he elevated red carpet fashion to its current level. He also famously became the first designer to ban underweight models from the runway. This decision followed the 2006 death of model Ana Carolina Reston. British designer Paul Smith called Armani a “dear friend.” He wrote that Armani’s “continuity, his down-to-earth nature and his staying power… have always been a huge inspiration for me.”
Tributes came from other notable figures as well. Actor Russell Crowe described Armani as a man who “made a mark acknowledged around the globe.” He said he “adored” Armani. The actor said he had planned to see him this month. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also paid her respects. She said with his “elegance, sobriety, and creativity,” he inspired the entire world. She also called him “a tireless worker” and a “symbol of the best of Italy.”
He understood the power of publicity. In fact, he was a true friend to Hollywood. He dressed many of its biggest stars. These included Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Julia Roberts. The designer also created stage outfits for Lady Gaga. He designed costumes for films, too. These included American Gigolo and The Wolf of Wall Street. He started his career in medicine, but moved into fashion in the 1960s. He later established his own luxury label in 1975.
Even in his tenth decade, Armani continued to present new collections. His March 2025 show made a statement on global politics. The designer stated that he “wanted to imagine new harmony.” He believed “that is what we all need.” His passing is a great loss. The fashion world mourns as Giorgio Armani dies. Vogue’s Laura Ingham described him as a “true gentleman” and “titan of the industry.” She added, “If you don’t know anything about fashion, you’ll still know Giorgio Armani.” His legacy is woven into fashion’s past, present, and future.
