Asiedu Nketiah Puts a Stop to NDC Leadership Campaigns
The NDC leadership race is premature, according to National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. He believes it is too early for any party member to campaign for the 2028 elections. So he stated, “If you campaign to replace President John Dramani Mahama when the government has not even attained a year in office… then we are not serious as a political party.” He spoke during his ‘Thank You’ tour. He urged those with presidential ambitions to support President Mahama’s agenda. That agenda includes resetting the economy and improving citizens’ lives.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah also called for unity. He stressed the need for discipline to sustain the party’s momentum. This will help them avoid infighting. Such conflicts, in his view, weaken the opposition. The NDC Chairman’s ‘Thank You’ tour has caused some controversy. Many people suggested the tour was a way to position himself for a future presidential bid. Party officials, however, say it was simply an appreciation effort. It was meant to thank executives, cadres, and grassroots organizers. They worked hard for the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.
The party also wanted to assure the electorate of its promises. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the party was reaching out to all voters. He stressed it was too early for any member to begin campaigning. This applies to both the flagbearer and national executive roles.
Credibility is important in politics, he explained. He recalled the 2024 elections. He himself ran a three-pronged campaign. President Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang focused on the presidential campaign. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah led the campaign for parliamentary candidates. Each campaign was tailored to constituency needs. As a result, the party flipped over a number of seats.
He said he had promised to visit the constituencies to thank them. He did not have to wait for the next elections. “I don’t have to wait for the next elections to visit the constituencies to thank them and campaign at the same time,” he stated. He pointed out he was not an armchair chairman. He takes the frontline in politics. In fact, he actively campaigns. Furthermore, he believes it is important to reach out to supporters and the electorate.
When asked about internal elections, he said the party has not made those decisions. He stressed, “our preoccupation is to support President Mahama deliver on his promises.” He emphasized that anyone campaigning for flag bearer would be doing so in vain. This is because the delegates who elect the flag bearer will change during the internal elections. He urged party members to remain calm and united. He appealed for understanding as the leadership works to ensure all loyal members get a chance to serve.
