I Played a Role in Reuniting Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy-Wendy Shay
In the world of Ghanaian music, the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) will forever be remembered — not for its winners, but for the dramatic altercation between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy that rocked the stage and sent shockwaves across the industry.
But while the public focused on the chaos and aftermath, singer Wendy Shay was quietly working behind the scenes to make peace happen.
Speaking on Okay FM on July 23rd with host Nana Romeo, Wendy opened up about how deeply the incident affected not just the artists involved, but the entire music ecosystem in Ghana.
“It’s not fair to keep bringing up that night,” she shared. “The whole industry was hurt. Brand deals were lost, and corporate entities started distancing themselves from creatives. It really set us back.”
One day after the VGMA night, Wendy paid a visit to popular Ghanaian entrepreneur Dr. Kofi Abban to express gratitude for his support. But what she received was a sobering reality check.
“He was disappointed in what happened. He said something like that had never occurred in Ghana’s music history, and it looked bad for all of us.”
Wanting to mend the broken trust, Wendy asked him a simple but powerful question: “How do we fix this?”
Dr. Abban told her he wanted to reach out to both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy but didn’t have their contact details. That’s when Wendy took action.
“I brought out my phone right there. I called Shatta Wale first and introduced him to Dr. Abban. Then I did the same with Stonebwoy.”
She recalled that Dr. Abban even offered financial support as a peace gesture and encouraged both parties to reconcile.
While the public credited journalist Nana Aba Anamoah with initiating the peace process, Wendy Shay clarified:
“Nana Aba came in later, but I was the one who started it all. That first connection laid the foundation for the larger reconciliation.”
Her actions opened the door for more influencers and stakeholders to step in and support unity in the music space.
