Fake professor title sparks legal warning from GTEC

GTEC threatens to sue Richard Kofi Asiedu over unearned ‘Professor’ title

GTEC cites illegal use of a fake professor title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a legal warning to Richard Kofi Asiedu.
He is the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
GTEC accuses him of using “Professor” without academic proof.
This defiance violates Ghana’s academic title laws.

In a letter dated July 28, 2025, GTEC demanded the immediate removal of the title.
The directive followed an earlier notice sent on June 2, 2025.

Conference poster triggered renewed scrutiny

Despite warnings, Mr. Asiedu appeared on a 2025 EELL conference poster as “Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu.”
This move raised concern within GTEC.
The Commission views it as deliberate misuse of a protected title.

GTEC described his actions as unethical and possibly misleading.
It requested proof of his highest academic qualification for verification.
No such documentation has been provided to date.

GTEC threatens court action under Act 1023

GTEC cited Section 8(4)(d) of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1023).
The law empowers GTEC to regulate and enforce academic title usage.
Failure to comply may lead to prosecution.

Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of GTEC, signed the official warning.
The letter was also sent to the NDC leadership and the Office of the President.
GTEC asked NDC executives to ensure compliance by Mr. Asiedu.

Honorary degrees do not grant professor status

In June 2025, GTEC contacted the St. Andrews Group of Schools, where Mr. Asiedu is CEO.
It acknowledged his honorary doctorate from Alfred Nobel University in Ukraine.
However, it warned that honorary degrees do not qualify for the “Professor” title.

According to GTEC, using such a title without validation is deceptive.
Mr. Asiedu was directed to drop the title by July 31, 2025, or face legal action.
Under Section 7(i) of Act 1023, GTEC has the authority to verify academic qualifications.
