Ghana Prisons Service meets Chief Justice on justice reforms

The Ghana Prisons Service has opened a critical conversation with the acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. Their goal was clear—strengthen collaboration and close operational gaps in the criminal justice system. The delegation raised urgent issues ranging from prolonged remand periods to weak data monitoring tools.

Led by Director General Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the delegation included top officers from the Prisons Directorate. They met with Supreme, Appeal, and High Court judges in a rare joint session to spark reform from both ends.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie highlighted key changes underway within prison facilities. She called for a stronger partnership between the Judiciary, Police, and Prison Services through a formal Parole Board. She explained that such a platform could fast-track parole decisions and improve system efficiency.

One issue stood out: female inmates often undergo pregnancy tests before sentencing. Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie questioned this practice and pushed for more humane policies. She also proposed joint training programmes for officers and judicial staff to improve communication and foster shared understanding between institutions.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie welcomed the proposals. He applauded the leadership of the Prisons Service and stressed that reform depends on joint effort. He called for the creation of Prisons Service Councils in every district. These bodies would include Judicial Service representatives who visit prisons regularly to listen to inmates and resolve concerns.

The acting Chief Justice assured the delegation that Ghana’s justice sector remains committed to inter-agency cooperation. He believes such collaboration will modernise service delivery and restore public confidence in the system.

The meeting underscored one key truth—real justice reform begins when institutions speak, listen, and act together.
