Mahama Urges Unity and Compassion in Wake of Military Helicopter Crash

Former President John Dramani Mahama has spoken publicly following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including top government and military officials. His statement, delivered with solemnity and resolve, was a call to national unity, reflection, and compassion.

“This is not a time for division, speculation, or political point-scoring,” he said. “It is a time for strength, for empathy, and for the enduring Ghanaian spirit that still stands tall when all else has failed.”

Mahama acknowledged the pain felt across the nation—from the Ghana Armed Forces and government ministries to the National Democratic Congress, which lost dedicated members in the crash. He urged all citizens to set aside their differences and offer comfort to the grieving families, framing this moment as one of collective national sorrow.

In his message, Mahama announced that a national memorial service titled “Evening of Reflection and Memorial” will be held at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, 9th August at 5:00 PM. He invited Ghanaians from all walks of life to attend in remembrance of those who served their nation faithfully.

Books of condolence are said to be made available from Sunday, 10th August to Thursday, 14th August at key institutions including the Ministries of Defence, Environment, Foreign Affairs, the GAF Headquarters, NADMO Head Office, and the NDC Headquarters.

A full interdenominational state funeral is scheduled for Friday, 15th August at the Black Star Square, where the nation will pay its final respects.

Mahama closed his message with a blessing for the departed and a prayer for Ghana:
“May we all be comforted by the knowledge that though they are gone from our sight, they remain forever in the spirit of the nation they so faithfully served.”
