Why Bawumia Doesn’t Deserve Automatic Second Chance

Bawumia doesn’t deserve an automatic second bid in the NPP flagbearer race, says Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng. He argues that only candidates who improve the party’s electoral results earn second chances. Kwarteng criticizes the selective enforcement of the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) directive to stop campaigns until after the Akwatia by-election. While some candidates respected the national mourning after the August 6 helicopter crash, others campaigned actively in the Ashanti Region.
Kwarteng rejects comparisons between Dr. Bawumia’s second bid and former Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo. He insists historical data shows only candidates who grew the party’s vote share earned a second chance. “In the NPP, a second presidential bid is not automatic. It is earned through strong election performance,” he stated.
Looking back, Professor Albert Adu Boahen won 30.29% of votes in 1992 despite tough political conditions. Kufuor increased this to 39.67% in 1996, and Akufo-Addo raised it further to 49.13% in 2008. By contrast, Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 vote share dropped to 41.61%, a decline of over seven points from Akufo-Addo’s debut and the worst performance in the Fourth Republic.
Kwarteng adds that Bawumia is the first NPP candidate to poll lower than his immediate predecessor on a first attempt. Even founding member Adu Boahen was denied a second chance under difficult circumstances. The upcoming 2028 election must focus on a strong, credible, and winnable candidate. Kwarteng believes Kennedy Agyapong fits that description best.
The opposition NDC aims to consolidate power after four years. Therefore, the NPP cannot risk presenting a weak candidate. The party’s delegates must choose wisely, focusing on growth and victory rather than entitlement. Ghana’s future depends on strong leadership and strategic choices.
