Crystal Palace Edge Liverpool on Penalties to Win 2025 FA Community Shield
Wembley Stadium — Sunday, August 3, 2025 — Crystal Palace added the FA Community Shield to their trophy collection with a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Liverpool after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Liverpool’s two debutants made an immediate impact. Hugo Ekitiké opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a curling strike after a 22-pass move. Jeremie Frimpong restored the lead in the 21st minute with a cross-shot that dipped over Dean Henderson.
In between, Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaïla Sarr. Mateta’s goal was his 31st in all competitions under Oliver Glasner, placing him behind only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, and Alexander Isak in that period.
Palace pushed hard in the second half and were rewarded in the 77th minute when Sarr ran onto Adam Wharton’s pass and finished off the post — his fourth career goal against Liverpool.

The match went to penalties for a third straight Community Shield. Mohamed Salah fired over, while Henderson saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Palace’s Eberechi Eze saw his spot-kick stopped. Borna Sosa hit the bar, but successful penalties from Mateta, Sarr, and Justin Devenny sealed the win.
It is Liverpool’s third consecutive Community Shield defeat on penalties (2019, 2020, 2025).
Final Score: Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool (Palace win 3-2 on penalties)
