The government has imposed an astounding GHC10,000 daily fine on MultiChoice Ghana (DSTV) for its failure to submit critical pricing data

An astounding DSTV fine now looms over MultiChoice Ghana. The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations is imposing a GHC10,000 daily penalty on the company. This massive fine started on Friday, August 15, 2025. You see, the company failed to provide crucial pricing data. Sector Minister Samuel Nartey George, MP, announced the drastic decision. He met with the DSTV team at his Ministry. Clearly, the ministry is serious about protecting consumers.

The Minister explained the ministry requested specific information from DSTV. They needed a detailed breakdown of bouquet prices. This included a list of tax components. Furthermore, they asked for pricing comparisons with at least six other African nations. These data points were absolutely essential. Indeed, they needed the information to have a proper discussion. This conversation was about reducing subscription fees for Ghanaians. However, DSTV completely missed the deadline. They received an extension until Monday, August 11, 2025. Still, they failed to comply with the request. The minister was incredibly patient, but his patience has finally run out.

The Electronic Communications Act (ECA) allows this penalty. The law states that every day an operator fails to provide requested information, they get fined. The penalty is GHC10,000 per day. The Minister confirmed this. He also made it clear the data request was separate from ongoing talks. He warned that the ministry would enforce the law. If necessary, they might even freeze DSTV’s accounts. This action would protect consumer interests. Moreover, the Minister assured everyone he would advocate for a tax review if the data supported it. He would only do this if taxes were the sole reason for high prices. Otherwise, he expects DSTV to follow their directive. This whole situation is very serious for everyone involved.
