Police Arrest Suspect in Mpohor Gold Shop Robbery, Hunt for Others

Police in Ghana have arrested one suspect in the Mpohor gold shop robbery while eight others remain at large. Investigators link the case to recent rural bank attacks.

Police have arrested one suspect after a violent gold shop robbery in the Mpohor District of the Western Region. The operation, which occurred on Saturday night, left one person injured and triggered a major manhunt for the remaining suspects.

According to police reports, nine masked men armed with pump-action guns stormed two gold buying shops around 7:30 p.m. They robbed the shops of cash and gold before fleeing into a nearby bush. During the attack, the robbers shot Eric Kwofie, aged 43, who sustained injuries. Police confirmed that the victim is receiving treatment while efforts continue to capture the other gang members.

Meanwhile, in a related development, police foiled another robbery attempt at the MRB Rural Bank in Winneba in the Central Region last Friday. The incident took place around 1 a.m. when the bank’s alarm system went off, alerting the patrol team on duty. When officers arrived, they faced heavy gunfire from the suspects. After a brief exchange, the gang escaped, abandoning a pump-action gun and burglary tools at the crime scene.

Investigators revealed that the robbers tried to break into the bank vault but failed because of the quick police intervention. Early findings suggest that the attempted robbery involved about five men. Police believe the gang could be linked to a series of rural bank robberies carried out in recent months.

According to the Anti-Armed Robbery Response Unit (AARU), the suspects may be hiding in Kumasi. Surveillance teams have been deployed in the Ashanti Region to track their movements and secure their arrest. Police remain confident that the coordinated operations will bring all members of the gang to justice.

These back-to-back cases highlight the ongoing challenges posed by armed gangs targeting gold shops and financial institutions. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of increased patrols and intelligence-led operations to ensure safety in affected communities.
