TikTok attack on Mahama: Two women remanded in Adentan Court

Two women appeared before the Adentan Circuit Court after a TikTok attack on Mahama stirred national outrage. The hearing took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The accused include Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service Person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician. Prosecutors said both women verbally abused former President John Dramani Mahama during a TikTok livestream on August 6, 2025.

During the livestream, the women allegedly mocked the former president with offensive remarks. They reportedly said, “We would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarfs had eaten him up, and that a lot of people are dying under his tenure of office,” along with other insulting comments.

Presiding Judge Mrs Angela Attachie ordered both suspects into police custody until September 2, 2025. She postponed their pleas to the next sitting.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, who leads the prosecution, requested the remand. He told the court that the remarks could provoke unrest and disturb public peace.

Investigators traced the abusive comments to Birago’s TikTok account under the name “Abena Birago.” They secured a digital recording of the livestream as evidence. Police arrested the two women shortly after identifying them from the broadcast.

Prosecutors confirmed that investigations continue. They intend to gather more evidence before the next court appearance.

The TikTok attack on Mahama has generated debate in Ghana about online accountability and political speech. Some Ghanaians condemned the insults, describing them as disrespectful and reckless. Others raised questions about free speech and the boundaries of criticism.

The court will reconvene on September 2, 2025. Prosecutors plan to present fresh findings, while the accused remain in custody until then.
