Tema Central NPP Secretary Rejects TDC Land Sale Claim
The Tema Development Company (TDC) is accusing a former staff member. They say he illegally sold public land to his wife. According to TDC, the price was a mere GHS2,000. Mr. Oquaye, the accused, rejects these claims. He calls them “false” and “unfair.” The TDC’s Managing Director, Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, made the initial accusation. He claimed the land was originally for a public toilet. Furthermore, he stated that TDC has now retrieved the land. An internal investigation led to Mr. Oquaye’s contract termination. This situation puts the Tema Central NPP Secretary at odds with TDC.
Mr. Oquaye spoke on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News. He explained that he had no involvement in the land allocation. In fact, his wife brought the issue to his attention. “This is something that my wife drew my attention to — the fact that her brother, who is called Caleb Kisei, who was a former worker of TDC until he travelled out of the country, had a portion of a plot in the same area, which is Community Five,” Oquaye said. He added that the brother told his wife about a commercial plot next to his. She could apply for it.
In addition, Mr. Oquaye said his wife followed proper procedures. She applied for the land. Moreover, she paid the Land Management Fee. She also paid the Fee Fixing of TDC. Oquaye insisted he had no part in the process. “I am a protocol officer, not a manager,” he explained. As a result, “I am not responsible for land allocation.” He said a former TDC Estate Manager approved the land. The manager’s name is Mr. Asare Darko. He is still alive. Mr. Oquaye’s wife paid the required fee. Consequently, she even applied for a permit. TDC approved the permit for GHS4,600. The land is in Community 5. Its size is 28 by 30 feet.
Mr. Oquaye maintained his innocence. He said his job was different. “My work had been to be in charge of events, be in charge of meetings,” he stated. He also handled institutional relationships. He arranged facility tours for VIPs. Therefore, he finds the accusation “very unfair.” This denial from the Tema Central NPP Secretary creates a new layer of conflict. The truth remains to be seen.
