Bawumias Vote in Zongo Communities Was Not Poor
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has dismissed allegations that he performed poorly in Bawumia Zongo communities during the 2024 general elections. He described such claims as baseless propaganda. Speaking at a party gathering in the Adansi Asokwa constituency on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Dr. Bawumia stated that narratives suggesting Muslims and Zongo voters abandoned him in the last election were not supported by evidence. Zongo communities, for instance, have historically been crucial to election outcomes. They are largely Muslim migrant settlements found in all of Ghana’s regions. They wield significant political influence as a result of their high populations.

“The propaganda out there is that Muslims and the Zongo people did not cast their votes for Dr. Bawumia,” he stated. “When I heard it, I asked, ‘Where is the data to support these claims?’ Because for me, if you tell me something, I need data to prove whether it’s true.” He said some people fabricated the allegations to make a case for their own presidential ambitions. This indicates a clear struggle for political influence within the NPP. The Zongo vote is particularly important because of its size. For this reason, political parties make promises to the communities to secure their votes. The NPP, for example, previously established a Zongo Development Fund. This was a revolutionary initiative.
The former Vice President refuted a claim from another presidential aspirant. That person allegedly claimed Bawumia won only one polling station in all the Zongos in the entire country. Dr. Bawumia further urged his supporters to rely on facts rather than rumors. The Bawumia Zongo communities message emphasizes data-driven decision-making in politics. It also highlights the critical role these communities play in Ghana’s democratic landscape.
