Hamile Immigration Tensions Escalate Over Kidnapping Plot
The Hamile immigration tensions recently erupted into violence. The unrest started in the border town of Hamile. It followed an alleged kidnapping plot. An Immigration Service officer supposedly conspired with Burkinabe security. Together, they allegedly tried to kidnap the wife of a wanted Burkinabe national. This has since led to property destruction. In addition, it has prompted a heavy security deployment.
Mohammed Fatawu is the Hamile West Assembly Member. He told Citi News that residents learned of the plot. He claimed the officer monitored the woman’s movements. This was to aid her capture. Fatawu said the woman was abducted. She was on her way from Côte d’Ivoire. Consequently, this sparked widespread outrage. The people believed she was being sent to be killed. They vowed to retaliate. In fact, they threatened to kill the officer. They also vowed to burn the immigration offices. This marked a new high for Hamile immigration tensions.
Protesters then set fire to several items. They burned the officer’s pickup truck. In addition, they torched his phone shop. They also destroyed a Burkinabe security operative’s motorcycle. Sadly, the chaos led to a tragic death. A woman named Mahamata collapsed. She died from a blood pressure attack. Therefore, the situation turned very serious. These border tensions continue to create problems.
Police and military reinforcements have since been deployed. They are working to restore order. Nevertheless, tensions remain high in Hamile. Meanwhile, the PRO for the Ghana Immigration Service spoke to a reporter. Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul Mumin said officials were in an emergency meeting. He promised to provide an update later. The situation remains volatile as officials meet.
